Diesel Heater Fault Codes, Starting Problems & Common Fixes
This diesel heater troubleshooting guide is designed to help identify common diesel heater faults, error codes and starting problems.
Many diesel heater issues are caused by low battery voltage, lack of fuel, air in the fuel line, restricted airflow or incorrect shutdown procedures.
Before replacing parts, work through the checks below carefully.
Important: Faults caused by misuse, incorrect installation or failure to follow the correct shutdown procedure may result in chargeable repairs.
Common Diesel Heater Error Codes
E00 – No Error
No fault has been detected.
If the heater is still not operating correctly, check the fuel supply, battery voltage and electrical connections.
E01 – Under Voltage
E01 indicates insufficient voltage reaching the diesel heater.
A diesel heater needs considerably more current during startup and shutdown than when it is already running.
Check:
- Leisure battery state of charge
- Battery terminals
- Heater wiring
- Earth connections
- Fuse and fuse holder
- Voltage reaching the heater itself
Measure the voltage at the heater/controller while the heater is starting, rather than relying only on a battery monitor elsewhere in the vehicle.
If the voltage drops excessively during startup, the heater may fail to ignite.
E02 – Over Voltage
E02 indicates that the supply voltage is too high for the heater.
Check that the heater is connected to the correct voltage supply.
A 12V diesel heater must be connected to a suitable 12V electrical system.
Do not continue attempting to operate the heater with an incorrect supply voltage.
E03 – Glow Plug Fault
E03 indicates a glow plug or glow-plug circuit fault.
Possible causes include:
- Loose electrical connection
- Damaged glow plug
- Wiring fault
- Insufficient battery voltage during startup
Check the heater’s power supply first, as low voltage can sometimes cause faults that appear to be component failures.
If the wiring and voltage are correct, the glow plug may require replacement.
E04 – Fuel Pump Fault
E04 indicates a problem with the diesel heater fuel pump or its electrical connection.
Check:
- Fuel pump connector
- Wiring to the pump
- Electrical plug is fully clicked into place
- Fuel pump is receiving a signal from the heater
- Fuel line is not kinked or restricted
If the fuel pump does not operate during the startup sequence, further investigation may be required.
E05 – Diesel Heater Overheating
E05 indicates that the heater has overheated.
Do not repeatedly restart an overheating heater without finding the cause.
Check:
- Warm-air intake is clear
- Hot-air outlet is unobstructed
- Ducting is not crushed
- Ducting is not blocked
- Heating vents are open
- Fan is able to rotate freely
- Airflow around the heater is adequate
Restricted airflow is one of the most common causes of diesel heater overheating.
E06 – Fan Motor Fault
E06 indicates a problem with the diesel heater fan motor or fan circuit.
Check the battery voltage before assuming the fan itself has failed.
Low voltage can prevent the motor from reaching the required speed during startup.
Also inspect the fan area for obstruction and check the electrical connections.
E07 – Communication Error
E07 indicates a communication problem between the heater and controller.
Check:
- Controller cable
- Wiring connections
- Plugs at both ends
- Bent or damaged connector pins
- Damage to the controller lead
Disconnect and reconnect the plugs carefully to make sure they are fully seated.
E08 – Diesel Heater Failed to Start / Fuel Supply Problem
E08 is one of the most common diesel heater fault codes.
It normally indicates that the heater has failed to receive or ignite sufficient fuel.
Possible causes include:
- Fuel tank is empty or low
- Air in the fuel line
- Fuel pump has lost its prime
- Blocked fuel filter
- Restricted fuel line
- Fuel pump fault
- Contaminated fuel
- Heater has not been used for an extended period
Check the Fuel Level
If the heater draws fuel from the vehicle’s main tank, check that the fuel level is comfortably above approximately ¼ tank.
Many standpipes do not extend all the way to the bottom of the vehicle tank. This prevents the diesel heater from completely draining the vehicle’s main fuel supply.
If the vehicle has recently been run very low on fuel, air may have entered the diesel heater fuel line.
Prime the Diesel Heater Fuel Line
After running out of fuel or replacing fuel-system components, the fuel line may need to be primed.
Follow the priming procedure specified for your heater/controller.
Do not repeatedly attempt full heater starts simply to pull fuel through a long empty line, as repeated failed starts can lead to additional faults and carbon build-up.
E10 – Multiple Failed Start Attempts
E10 normally indicates that the heater has recorded one or more faults following repeated unsuccessful starting attempts.
Rather than repeatedly restarting the heater, identify the original cause first.
Common reasons include:
- Low voltage
- No fuel
- Air in the fuel line
- Fuel pump issue
- Glow plug problem
- Restricted combustion air
- Carbon build-up
Once the underlying problem has been corrected, the heater can be restarted.
Diesel Heater Fuel Supply Problems
A diesel heater needs a clean and consistent fuel supply.
Check the complete fuel system, including:
- Fuel tank
- Standpipe
- Fuel hose
- Hard nylon fuel line
- Fuel filter
- Fuel pump
- Fuel-line connections
Look for:
- Air bubbles
- Loose joints
- Split hoses
- Blockages
- Contaminated fuel
- Incorrectly installed fuel pump
The fuel pump should normally be installed at the correct angle recommended by the heater manufacturer.
Diesel Heater Fuel Quality
Use suitable clean fuel for your heater.
Do not use used engine oil or other unsuitable fuels in a diesel air heater.
Contaminated fuel can cause poor combustion, excessive carbon build-up and damage to heater components.
If fuel is stored for long periods, particularly in partially filled containers, condensation and contamination can also become a problem.
Check stored diesel carefully before using it.
Diesel Heater Battery Problems
Low voltage is one of the most common causes of diesel heater starting problems.
A diesel heater draws its highest current during:
- Startup
- Glow-plug operation
- Shutdown/cool-down
A battery may appear to have reasonable voltage when nothing is running but drop significantly as soon as the heater starts.
How to Check Diesel Heater Voltage
Measure the voltage at the heater during startup.
If the voltage falls significantly, inspect:
- Battery condition
- Cable size
- Cable length
- Electrical connections
- Earth connection
- Fuse holder
- Split charge relay
- DC-DC charger
- Leisure battery charging system
Poor wiring can cause voltage drop even when the battery itself is healthy.
Diesel Heater Producing Black Smoke
Black smoke can indicate incomplete combustion.
Possible causes include:
- Carbon build-up
- Restricted combustion air
- Fuel-delivery problem
- Incorrect installation
- Heater repeatedly operated at very low output
- Blocked exhaust
If the heater is heavily carboned up, servicing may be required.
Diesel Heater Coking
Carbon or coking can build up inside a diesel heater when combustion is poor.
Signs can include:
- Difficulty starting
- Excessive smoke
- Repeated E08/E10 faults
- Reduced heat output
- Heavy soot in the exhaust
- Heater shutting down unexpectedly
Repeatedly starting and stopping the heater for very short periods can contribute to carbon build-up.
Whenever practical, allow the heater to reach proper operating temperature.
Always Allow the Diesel Heater to Cool Down
Never disconnect the electrical supply while the diesel heater is running or carrying out its shutdown cycle.
When you switch the heater off using the controller, the fuel supply stops but the fan continues running.
This cooling cycle removes heat from the combustion chamber and protects internal components.
Cutting the electrical power before this process finishes can cause damage to the heater.
Always wait until the fan has completely stopped before isolating the heater’s electrical supply.
Diesel Heater Exhaust Installation
The exhaust system is a critical part of a diesel heater installation.
Check that:
- Exhaust is securely connected
- Exhaust is not crushed
- Exhaust outlet is unobstructed
- Exhaust gases cannot enter the vehicle
- Exhaust is routed safely away from combustible materials
Avoid unnecessarily long exhaust systems.
As a general guide, keeping the exhaust around 1.5 metres or less where possible helps avoid excessive restriction, although the manufacturer’s installation requirements should always take priority.
Never route the exhaust through an old radiator or similar device in an attempt to reclaim exhaust heat.
Diesel Heater Air Intake
The combustion-air intake must also remain clear.
Check that:
- Intake pipe isn’t blocked
- Intake isn’t positioned where exhaust fumes can be drawn back into the heater
- Intake opening isn’t covered with mud, debris or insulation
Correct combustion requires both a reliable fuel supply and unrestricted combustion air.
Heater Starts Then Shuts Down
If your diesel heater starts but stops shortly afterwards, check:
- Battery voltage during startup
- Fuel supply
- Fuel-line air bubbles
- Fuel filter
- Fuel pump
- Combustion-air intake
- Exhaust restriction
- Warm-air ducting
- Overheating
- Error code shown on the controller
The fault code should help narrow down the problem.
Diesel Heater Will Not Start After Being Unused
If the heater has not been used for several weeks or months:
- Check battery condition
- Check fuel quality
- Inspect the fuel line
- Prime the fuel system if necessary
- Check for contamination
- Inspect the exhaust for excessive soot
It is good practice to operate a diesel heater periodically rather than leaving it unused for very long periods.
Carbon Monoxide Safety
A suitable carbon monoxide alarm should always be installed when using a diesel heater in a campervan, motorhome, boat or enclosed space.
If you do not have a working carbon monoxide alarm fitted, do not use the heater until one has been installed.
Make sure the exhaust system is correctly installed and regularly inspected for leaks or damage.
